American Standard Bathroom Remodeling: The Fort Lauderdale Owner’s Guide

A full American Standard bathroom remodel in Fort Lauderdale typically runs $9,000 to $28,000 installed, depending on whether you’re refreshing a small guest bath or gutting a master suite down to the studs. We stock and install American Standard fixtures, valves, and trim kits regularly, and most straightforward swaps can be scheduled within a week. If you’re here because a handle spins without stopping the water, a shower valve won’t hold temperature, or a toilet runs at 3 a.m., you’ve found the right page. Most Fort Lauderdale homeowners discover a failed American Standard part the hard way: a drip that becomes a pool, a cartridge that seizes mid-shower, or a flange that quietly rots the subfloor while the tile still looks fine.

We’re an independent remodeling contractor, not an American Standard dealer or affiliate. That matters because we install American Standard parts every week and we’ve learned what holds up in South Florida humidity – and what doesn’t. Luca Romano started pulling apart American Standard valves years ago when a customer on Las Olas Boulevard handed him a mystery cartridge and said “the plumber said this doesn’t exist.” It existed. We just had to order the right one.

Which American Standard Models This Applies To

American Standard has been making bathroom fixtures since 1875, and over that time they’ve produced dozens of valve bodies, trim lines, and toilet platforms. The two families we work with most in Fort Lauderdale are the Champion and Cadet toilet lines, plus the Reliant and Colony faucet and shower valve series. If you have a newer home (built after 2010) in Victoria Park or Rio Vista, there’s a good chance you have a Cadet Pro toilet hiding under the lid with a 1.6 GPF flush valve that’s starting to sweat.

The identification trick that saves everyone time: lift the tank lid and look for the model number stamped inside the tank, usually near the water line. It’ll read something like “4049” or “2887.” That number, not the bowl style, is what determines which flush valve, fill valve, or flapper matches. For shower valves, pull the handle and look for a small number on the face of the cartridge or the retaining nut. American Standard uses roughly a half-dozen cartridge designs across their lines – the M962352, the 023529, the A954440 – and they are not interchangeable. We’ve seen owners buy the “universal” cartridge from a big box store, jam it in, and destroy the valve body. That’s a $900 mistake on a $40 part.

Our stance on parts: OEM American Standard parts when the valve body or trim demands it, quality aftermarket equivalents (Danco, Korky, Fluidmaster) when they’re truly identical and the manufacturer is reputable. For toilets, aftermarket flush valves often outperform OEM at half the price. For shower cartridges, we use OEM almost always. The tolerances are tighter and a slight miss means a temperature spike when someone flushes a toilet in the other bathroom.

Signs Your American Standard Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing

  • Handle turns without resistance or spins freely. The cartridge stem has sheared or the retaining clip gave out. This is usually a worn M962352 cartridge in older Reliant valves – the plastic stem is the failure point, not the brass body.
  • Water temperature shifts suddenly when other fixtures run. The pressure-balancing spool inside the cartridge is sticking from mineral buildup. Fort Lauderdale’s hard water accelerates this; we see it in 5 to 7 years instead of the 10 you’d get with softened water.
  • Toilet runs every 15 minutes for 10 seconds. The flapper on a Champion flush valve has warped. The 3-inch flapper design is great when it seals, but South Florida heat cycling warps the rubber and the tank slowly drains.
  • Water seeps at the base of the toilet or the tile feels soft nearby. The wax ring has failed or the flange is cracked. In slab homes around Sailboat Bend, we often find the flange bolts rusted through from years of bathroom humidity.
  • Grout stays dark and never dries in the shower corners. Water is getting behind the tile at the valve or the drain assembly. By the time you see it on the surface, the waterproofing has usually been compromised for months. We typically open the wall and replace the valve, the backer board, and the tile in one go.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A freestanding soaking tub in a remodeled primary bathroom

For Fort Lauderdale homeowners, here’s the honest breakdown:

  • Cartridge replacement (shower valve): $275 – $525 installed, depending on valve access and whether we need to open the wall.
  • Toilet rebuild (flush valve, fill valve, flapper): $225 – $400 installed, parts included.
  • Full bathroom remodel (American Standard fixtures): $9,000 – $28,000, depending on size, tile choices, and whether plumbing moves.
  • Walk-in shower with American Standard valve and trim: $4,500 – $12,000, includes waterproofing, tile, glass, and fixtures.

Every quote is a written line-item price before any work starts. You’ll see the part number, the part cost, the labor, and the timeline. If we open a wall and find rotted studs, you’ll get a photo and a written change order before we touch anything else. No surprise line items at the end. The work carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it’s not right, we come back and make it right, in writing.

DIY or Call Us?

Replacing a flapper or a fill valve is genuinely doable if you can identify your model and you’re comfortable with a wrench. We’ve had customers in Flagler Village do it in 20 minutes with a Korky replacement and a YouTube video. Shower cartridges are a different animal. The retaining clip can be corroded into place, the valve body can crack under too much force, and if you don’t shut the water off properly you’ll find out exactly how fast a Fort Lauderdale water main floods a bathroom. We routinely get calls from owners who got the cartridge halfway out and now the handle won’t go back on, the water won’t stop, and the wall is opened on one side. That’s a $500 learning experience that costs $275 when we do it the first time.

If the tile is coming off, the grout is failed, or you’re opening the wall, call us. The waterproofing behind that tile is what separates a shower that lasts 20 years from one that rots the drywall in three. Call (754) 354-7423 and we’ll tell you straight what it’ll take.
