Therma-Tru Kitchen Remodeling: The Fort Lauderdale Owner’s Guide
If you have a Therma-Tru door in your Fort Lauderdale kitchen and it’s not closing right, sticking, or letting humidity in around the edges, you’re likely looking at a failed weather seal, worn hinge, or a warped slab that needs replacement. A Therma-Tru kitchen remodeling project in Fort Lauderdale typically runs $14,000 – $45,000 installed, depending on whether we’re swapping a single door, reframing an opening, or rebuilding the kitchen around it. Most owners find us after a door has been dragging for months and finally split the threshold or cracked the jamb. We stock the common Therma-Tru seals, sweeps, and hinge kits on the truck, so the fix usually happens same day once we see the door in person.
We’re Sawyer Remodel Fort Lauderdale, and we’re an independent general contractor serving Fort Lauderdale and nearby areas. We’re not affiliated with Therma-Tru, but we’ve installed and repaired enough of their doors to know exactly how the Fort Lauderdale humidity and salt air treat them over time.
Which Therma-Tru Models This Applies To

Therma-Tru makes three main door lines that show up in Fort Lauderdale kitchens: the Classic-Craft series (fiberglass, textured wood grain), the Smooth-Star series (smooth fiberglass, painted), and the Pulse series (polyurethane core with a simulated wood look). The part you need depends on which line you have, and the easiest way to identify it is to open the door and look at the hinge edge. There’s usually a sticker there with the model name and a date code. If the sticker’s long gone, measure the slab thickness. Classic-Craft and Smooth-Star are typically 1-3/4″ thick. Pulse doors run the same thickness but have a distinctly lighter feel when you swing them.
The compatibility gotcha with Therma-Tru is the weatherstripping. Each series uses a slightly different kerf profile on the bottom sweep, so a sweep meant for a Smooth-Star will fit loose on a Classic-Craft and leak air. We bring all three profiles on the truck so we match it on site. For hinges, Therma-Tru uses standard 4-1/2″ x 4-1/2″ corner hinges on most residential doors, but if you have the adjustable-threshold system, the replacement is unique to Therma-Tru and worth getting as an OEM part rather than an aftermarket equivalent. Aftermarket seals from the big box stores are hit or miss in South Florida. The cheaper ones harden in two summers and you’re back to the same draft.

Signs Your Therma-Tru Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing
- You can see daylight under the door. That means the bottom sweep is shot or the threshold has settled. In Fort Lauderdale, both happen because the concrete slab under the door shifts with summer rain and humidity cycles. The fix is usually a new sweep and a threshold adjustment, not a full door replacement.
- The door sticks at the top corner on the latch side. Fiberglass doors in South Florida absorb heat and the hinge screws can back out microscopically over hundreds of open-close cycles. The slab sags. We correct it by resetting the hinges and sometimes shimming behind the top hinge.
- You hear a rattle when the dishwasher runs. That’s the door not seating fully against the weatherstripping. The latch might need adjustment, or the framing around the opening has moved enough that the strike plate no longer lines up with the bolt.
- Condensation or mildew forms on the interior face of the door near the bottom. The seal between the slab and the frame is allowing moist air through. Fort Lauderdale kitchens with a dishwasher or range hood pulling air make this worse. It’s a seal fix, not a humidity problem you can solve with a dehumidifier.
- The door won’t stay latched when you pull it closed gently. The strike tab has worn or the bolt alignment is off by an eighth of an inch. If you have to slam it, you’re making the problem worse. A properly adjusted door latches with a finger push.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

A full kitchen remodeling project in Fort Lauderdale that includes a Therma-Tru door replacement runs $14,000 – $45,000. That range covers everything from a door swap within an existing opening on the low end, up to a full kitchen teardown with new cabinetry, counters, and a wider door opening with structural header work on the high end. If you’re only replacing the Therma-Tru part itself, like a sweep, hinge set, or threshold, that’s typically $150 – $450 installed including the part and labor.
What drives the full-project cost in Fort Lauderdale is the same everywhere: whether we’re moving walls, upgrading electrical for new appliances, and what cabinet and counter lines you pick. We write the price down before any work starts, so the number on the quote is the number you pay. No change orders, no surprise line items at the end. Our work is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if something isn’t done right, we make it right, in writing, on every project.

DIY or Call Us?
You can replace a Therma-Tru bottom sweep yourself. Pry off the old one, note the kerf profile, slide in the replacement, and trim it to width. Takes fifteen minutes if you have the right part. Hinge adjustments are trickier. If you remove the wrong screw or over-tighten a hinge into a stripped hole, you’ve got a door that sags worse than before and a jamb that’s now compromised. Kitchen door replacement and any reframing around the opening is not a DIY job in Fort Lauderdale. You’re cutting into a load-bearing wall in many older homes, and the humidity means you need flashing and sealing done right or termites find the gap in a year. Call us at (754) 354-7423 and we’ll take a look. The estimate is free.
FAQs

A Therma-Tru fiberglass door that’s properly sealed should last 20 to 30 years in South Florida weather. The weatherstripping and bottom sweep typically need replacement every 3 to 5 years because the heat and humidity break down the gasket material faster than the door itself. If your door slab is warping, it usually means the seal failed years ago and moisture got into the frame, not the slab. Call (754) 354-7423 and we’ll tell you whether it’s a part swap or a full replacement. Estimates are free.
Yes, most Therma-Tru kitchen doors in Fort Lauderdale can be repaired. Sweeps, hinges, thresholds, strike plates, and weatherstripping are all replaceable parts that cost $150 – $450 installed. A full replacement only makes sense when the slab is cracked, the frame has rotted, or you want a different style or size. We’ll tell you straight which one you’re looking at. Call (754) 354-7423 to schedule an inspection.
A simple door slab swap within an existing frame takes a half day on site. Full kitchen remodeling with a new door opening, cabinets, counters, and backsplash runs 4 to 8 weeks depending on scope and material lead times. We give you a timeline in writing when we quote, and photo updates along the way so you know what got done each day. Call (754) 354-7423 for a free estimate.
Yes, we keep the common Therma-Tru sweeps, hinge kits, and threshold caps for Classic-Craft, Smooth-Star, and Pulse doors stocked on our trucks in Fort Lauderdale. If you have the adjustable-threshold system, we order that OEM part directly and have it within a few days. For anything Therma-Tru, we also work with the same quality aftermarket suppliers we use for other premium brands like KraftMaid cabinetry, Cambria and Silestone counters. Call (754) 354-7423 and Luca Romano can tell you over the phone if we have your part on hand.
