PGT Kitchen Remodeling: The Fort Lauderdale Owner’s Guide

A full PGT kitchen remodeling project in Fort Lauderdale typically runs $14,000 to $45,000 installed, depending on cabinet count, countertop material, and whether layout changes are involved. We stock PGT-compatible cabinetry hardware, hinges, drawer slides, and trim pieces on our trucks for repair work, and we can source full cabinet and countertop systems for complete gut-and-rebuild jobs. Most owners reach out after a hinge finally gives out, a drawer front starts sagging, or a cabinet box swells from Florida humidity and the door won’t close square anymore.

Sometimes it’s not the cabinet itself. In Fort Lauderdale, where salt air and 70% humidity are facts of life, the usual failure points are the soft-close mechanisms, the adjustable shelf pins, or the corner braces that hold a cabinet square. If the kitchen was built with PGT cabinetry and something’s failing, we can usually identify the exact part, match it to the run, and get it installed without replacing the whole kitchen.

Which PGT Models This Applies To

An open kitchen and dining area after a remodel

PGT cabinetry and kitchen systems span several lines, and the hardware doesn’t always cross over between them. The three series we see most often in Fort Lauderdale homes are the standard overlay lines, the full-overlay euro-style runs, and the inset-door builds that show up in higher-end condos near Las Olas Boulevard.

The compatibility gotcha with PGT kitchen cabinets is the hinge cup size. Standard face-frame cabinets take a 35mm hinge cup with a half-overlay plate, but the full-overlay lines often use a 26mm cup with a completely different plate spacing. If you grab the wrong hinge at a big-box store, the door won’t sit flush no matter how you adjust it, and you’ll be chasing gaps for the life of the kitchen. The easiest way to identify your run: look inside the cabinet door for a small stamped code, usually two letters plus four digits. That tells us the series and the exact hinge spec.

For OEM versus aftermarket, here’s the honest math from our crew. OEM PGT hinges and slides are well-built, but they’re priced like OEM parts, and lead times from the distributor can stretch to three or four weeks in South Florida. Quality aftermarket equivalents from Blum, Salice, and Grass often match or exceed the OEM spec for 30 to 40 percent less, and we stock them locally. For drawer slides, we don’t recommend generic no-name slides, period. The ball-bearing cages fail early, and in a humid Fort Lauderdale kitchen, a cheap slide seizes within two or three years. We’d rather install a Blum or Salice unit and be done with it.

Signs Your PGT Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing

  • The soft-close feature stops working on one or two drawers. This almost always means the damper mechanism inside the slide or hinge has blown out. PGT soft-close hardware uses a small piston that loses its fluid seal over time. Sometimes the slide is fine and just the damper clip needs replacing; other times it’s the whole slide.
  • Cabinet doors won’t stay closed, or they spring back open. This points to hinge failure or a hinge plate that’s worked loose from the face frame. In humid Fort Lauderdale kitchens, the wood around the screw holes can soften, the screws lose bite, and the hinge shifts just enough to misalign the door.
  • A drawer front sags or rubs against the cabinet frame when you open it. The drawer’s front-to-side joint has likely loosened, or the undermount slide has started to bend. PGT drawer boxes use dado and glue construction, but ten or fifteen years of Florida humidity can delaminate the joint.
  • The cabinet box itself is swelling at the base or along the toe kick. This is water damage, usually from a slow plumbing leak under the sink or a dishwasher overflow. Once MDF or particleboard swells, it doesn’t shrink back. The fix is a new cabinet box or a custom modification, not a patch job.
  • Adjustable shelf pins keep popping out or won’t sit level. The pin holes in the cabinet sides have worn oval. PGT cabinets use 5mm pins, and once the holes wallow out, the shelf will never sit right again. We fix this by drilling and inserting brass sleeves, which holds better than the original wood.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A galley kitchen opened up to the dining room with a new peninsula

Installed pricing in Fort Lauderdale depends on what’s actually failing and how much of the kitchen has to come apart. Here’s the breakdown we give homeowners before any work starts:

  • Hinge and slide replacement on 10 to 20 doors/drawers: $400 to $1,800 installed
  • Full kitchen remodel (cabinets, countertops, backsplash): $14,000 to $45,000 installed
  • Small kitchen remodel (fewer boxes, simpler layout): $9,000 to $20,000 installed
  • Cabinet installation only (new boxes, existing room): $4,000 to $13,000 installed
  • Countertop installation on existing cabinets: $2,000 to $6,500 installed
  • Backsplash installation: $800 to $2,500 installed
  • Kitchen island installation (new island, including cabinetry): $3,000 to $10,000 installed

Those numbers always include the parts, the labor, the haul-away, and the written price before we start. No change orders at the door, no surprise line items. If a cabinet box has water damage and we have to rebuild a section, we’ll tell you the added number before we cut anything. Every parts and remodel job carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise, which means if the work isn’t right a year later, we make it right, in writing.

One more thing that matters in Fort Lauderdale: laminated and MDF cabinet components don’t survive flooding or long-term unventilated humidity. If you’re near the Intracoastal in neighborhoods like Rio Vista or Victoria Park, we recommend solid plywood boxes over MDF for any new cabinet work, because the plywood handles our summer moisture cycles far better.

DIY or Call Us?

If a hinge plate has come loose, you can check whether the screws are backing out of the face frame. Sometimes the fix is tightening screws and adjusting the hinge. If the screw holes are stripped, that’s a 10-minute repair for us, but it’s easy to make it worse with a toothpick-and-glue hack, especially if the cabinet face is already soft. Drawer slides and soft-close dampers are also within reach for a patient homeowner, but you have to match the slide length and mounting style exactly, and that’s where most DIY attempts go sideways.

Cabinet boxes, water damage, structural repairs, and anything touching a gas line or electrical run should not be attempted without a licensed contractor. A swollen cabinet box hides what’s behind it, and in a Fort Lauderdale kitchen, it’s usually plumbing. We’d rather you call us before the wall opens up. That’s what we’re here for. Call (754) 354-7423 and we’ll tell you what you’re actually dealing with.
