Schluter Driveway & Pavers: The Fort Lauderdale Owner’s Guide
If you have a Schluter driveway or paver system that’s cracking, shifting, or separating at the edges, we stock and install Schluter-compatible replacement pavers and edge restraints across Fort Lauderdale. Installed paver driveway replacement in this market typically runs $7,000 – $18,000, while smaller paver repairs and single-section replacements usually land between $800 and $3,500 depending on the square footage and base condition. Most Fort Lauderdale owners discover the failure the same way: a paver sinks after a heavy summer downpour, an edge restraint pulls loose near a sprinkler line, or sand washes out between joints after a few storm seasons. The good news is that Schluter paver systems are modular, so you rarely need to tear out the whole driveway when one section fails.
A quick note before we go further: Sawyer Remodel Fort Lauderdale is an independent contractor, not a Schluter dealer or corporate affiliate. We work with their paver and edge restraint systems every week, but we answer to you, not to a manufacturer.
Which Schluter Models This Applies To

Schluter’s outdoor paver line is built around a few core products, and the part you need depends on which one you have. The TROBA-LINE and TROBA-PLUS drainage sheets sit under paver driveways and walkways, managing water movement below the surface. The BARA edge profiles, including BARA-RT and BARA-RS, are the metal or PVC restraints that hold the outer course of pavers in place. If your pavers themselves are the problem, the issue is usually that the original installer used a field paver that wasn’t rated for vehicular load, or the bedding layer has failed underneath.
The compatibility gotcha that trips up most homeowners is the height of the Schluter edge profile against the paver thickness. A BARA-RT edge restraint sized for a 2cm paver will not secure a 3cm driveway paver properly, and in Fort Lauderdale’s wet season, that quarter-inch gap is enough to let water undermine the outer edge within two or three years. Measure your paver thickness before calling for a part, and check the top edge of the restraint for the stamped size code. That one measurement saves most of the back-and-forth.
On the OEM versus aftermarket question, we’re direct about this: Schluter’s edge restraints are worth paying for when you’re using Schluter drainage matting underneath. They’re engineered to interlock with their own drainage channel, and a generic restraint will leave a seam where water gets in. For the pavers themselves, many quality concrete paver manufacturers in South Florida produce units that sit fine on a Schluter base, as long as the thickness and load rating match. The restraint is the part you don’t substitute.

Signs Your Schluter Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
- Sunken pavers near the driveway edge. This is almost always a bedding layer washout under the outer course. In Fort Lauderdale, the daily afternoon thunderstorms saturate the sand base, and if the edge restraint has pulled loose, the sand escapes through the gap and the paver drops.
- Pavers shifting out of alignment after rain. When you see a paver drifting a half-inch or more after a storm, the restraint is no longer holding tension. The Schluter BARA profile may be rusted at the anchor points or the anchors were driven into sand instead of a solid base.
- Weeds or grass pushing up between joints in a line pattern. This usually traces back to a failed joint sand that was never compacted properly. It looks cosmetic at first, but roots grow into the bedding layer and start separating the pavers from underneath.
- A low spot that holds water for more than an hour after rain stops. This isn’t just an annoyance, it’s the base layer settling unevenly. Left alone in South Florida, that standing water works into the subgrade and widens the depression every season.
- Edge restraint visible above the paver surface. If you can see the top of the metal or PVC edge, the pavers have settled below the restraint. The profile should sit flush with or slightly below the paver surface. Exposed restraint edges also become a trip hazard on the walkway sections.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what we quote in Fort Lauderdale, and we’re giving you real numbers because you shouldn’t have to call just to know if this is in your ballpark.
- Partial paver section replacement (under 100 sq ft): $800 – $3,500 installed. This covers removing the failed section, recompacting the base, reinstalling pavers, and fresh joint sand.
- Full paver driveway installation: $7,000 – $18,000 installed. The wide range is driven by paver type, total square footage, whether we’re pulling an old concrete slab first, and whether the existing base is salvageable.
- Driveway replacement (any surface type): $5,000 – $14,000 installed.
- Driveway sealing (paver or concrete): $250 – $700.
- Schluter edge restraint replacement only: Typically $300 – $900 including tear-out of the old profile, new anchors, and resetting the outer course. This is the single most common repair we do.
Every quote includes the written price before work starts, the parts and labor broken out line by line, and our 365-Day Done Right Promise on the repair. If the base fails again within a year, we come back and fix it under the guarantee. No change orders, no surprise at the invoice.
DIY or Call Us?
A paver driveway is one of the friendlier outdoor repairs to inspect yourself, but the demo work can go sideways fast. You can safely sweep out loose joint sand, check whether your edge restraint is still anchored, and measure your paver thickness. What you shouldn’t do is start digging out a sunken section without understanding the base underneath. Fort Lauderdale subgrade is mostly sand, and if you remove too much without recompacting in lifts, you’ll have the same sag in six months.
Paver work is heavy, and it’s not a dangerous repair the way a garage spring is, but the physical toll is real. Moving 200 square feet of pavers, even once, will wear out most homeowners. If you’re down in one of the older neighborhoods near Las Olas Boulevard where driveways are tight and access is narrow, add a wheelbarrow and a lot of patience to the list. Most people call us after the first hour. Call (754) 354-7423 and we’ll give you a straight answer on whether this is a weekend fix or a crew job.
FAQs

A properly installed paver driveway on a Schluter drainage base should last 20 – 30 years in South Florida, with the pavers themselves easily surviving that long and the edge restraints typically needing attention around the 10 – 15 year mark. The weak point in Fort Lauderdale is always water management. Call (754) 354-7423 and we’ll tell you if what you’re seeing is normal wear or a base failure.
Yes, in most cases a single failed section can be lifted, the base recompacted, and the same pavers reset if they’re not cracked. We only recommend full replacement when the base failure has spread under more than half the driveway. Estimates to find out are free.
A single-section repair or edge restraint replacement is usually a one-day job for our crew. A full driveway replacement takes 3 – 5 working days, including base work and compaction time between lifts. We’ll give you the timeline in writing before we start.
We stock the most common Schluter BARA edge restraint sizes and TROBA drainage matting on our trucks, along with joint sand and base material. If your paver thickness requires a size we don’t have on board, we can usually have it by the next business day from our local South Florida suppliers. We also regularly work with KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone for interior projects, so our supply chain is not a one-brand shop.
